Life Abroad: Navigating Entrepreneurship and Federal Contracting in Germany as a Spouse.

I wanted to share a bit about my experience living abroad in Germany, and how it's been quite a journey of adaptation, connection, and personal growth for me and my family.
The Adventure of Adaptation
Moving to Germany has been both exciting and challenging. The country is beautiful, with its charming landscapes and efficient infrastructure. But adjusting to a new culture and language has been a big part of our experience. While many Germans speak English, learning German has been crucial. It's helped us navigate daily life, from shopping to socializing with neighbors.
Understanding German culture has also been a learning curve. Germans value punctuality, privacy, and directness, which is different from what we were used to. However, I've come to appreciate these traits, as they contribute to the smooth functioning of daily life here.
Building Connections: Creating a Village
One of the most important aspects of our move has been building a support network. As a spouse, I’ve made it a priority to create connections for both myself and my family. The expat community here is incredibly vibrant, and I’ve found that joining local groups, attending social events, and taking language classes has been instrumental in making friends and finding support.
These connections have been invaluable. Fellow expats have shared practical advice and provided emotional support, making the transition smoother. These friendships have helped combat homesickness and provided a sense of belonging in our new home.
Supporting My Spouse's Career
Our move to Germany was primarily driven by my spouse's career, and supporting them has been a significant part of my role here. This support means being flexible and understanding as they navigate the German work culture, which emphasizes work-life balance and has a different pace compared to what we were used to.
I’ve taken on a lot of the household responsibilities to ensure that everything runs smoothly, allowing my spouse to focus on their job. This teamwork has been essential for both of us to thrive in our new environment.
Keeping the Kids Active and Engaged
Keeping the kids active and happy has been a top priority. Germany offers so many opportunities for children to engage in sports and outdoor activities. From local sports clubs to exploring beautiful parks, there’s always something to keep them busy and entertained.
Adjusting to the German education system, which emphasizes independence and self-directed learning, has been an interesting experience. It took some time, but seeing our kids adapt and thrive in this new environment has been incredibly rewarding.
Taking Care of Myself
Amidst all of this—supporting my spouse, helping the kids adjust, and managing the household—I’ve learned the importance of self-care. Taking time for my own interests and well-being has been crucial. Whether it's joining a fitness class, exploring new hobbies, or enjoying quiet moments in nature, taking care of myself helps me stay balanced and happy.
I've also sought out my own community, joining local clubs and engaging in activities beyond the expat circle. These connections have helped me feel more rooted and at home here in Germany.
Embracing the Journey
Living abroad in Germany has been a transformative journey for our family. It’s been filled with challenges, but also with incredible experiences and growth. By creating a supportive network, staying active, and taking care of myself, we’ve found a way to embrace our new life here.
Every day brings new adventures, and while we miss home, we’re discovering that home can be wherever you make it—surrounded by love, support, and a willingness to embrace the unknown.
